Billy J. Nab's Portfolio

Billy J. Nab's Portfolio

The new web design and development portfolio has been launched, and is now available. New samples and references will be added over the coming weeks, so keep checking back for updates to it! It currently highlights the past three years of experience, being the most relevant. It will begin to feature more graphic design samples and much more programming examples as I prepare them and add to them. Having nearly 8 years worth of code to sift through and find relevant and still viable samples for today’s web has been a challenge, but one I have been meeting head on.

Update To New Server

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

Well, as you can tell, I have placed a few adsense blocks on the site. Have to try monetization at least a bit to offset the cost of the server.

Things seem to have gone pretty smoothly, and I am getting reports that the site load time is pretty decent, so that is a plus. I have most of the plug-ins I use reinstalled and configured, minus one or two of them that I chose to wait a bit on. One of the nice things is, with the new server I have access to more updated software, which allows more functionality for use in the blog and other areas.

New Server Up & Running

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

Well, after much configuration (still some hiccups) I have the blog running on the new server, in a different location than before to boot. It has taken some doing, and after being down for nearly a week and a half, I have most of my posts salvaged and most of my content salvaged, though there is still some missing. My old server officially died with disk errors being present at boot up on December 10, 2008. I was able to get nearly 3 1/2 years use out of a $125 eBay special. Not bad.

The biggest thing was trying to get things transferred without any backups short of a database backup I made some weeks ago. Essentially, my old server was just that, old and with age comes problems. Needless to say I am now up and running on a pretty decent dual processor based server, with hands-on access to it at anytime should the need arise. My old server was located a 4 hour drive away, and the support costs of having the ISP that was performing the co-lo was going to be exponentially more than it was worth.

If you should notice anything strange or odd, feel free to send me a note about it. You will also notice there are currently no Google ads, or any other advertising at this time. I am still undecided on advertising on the site, since monetizing was never a forefront activity.

Server Issues

Saturday, November 8th, 2008

I have posted a few times in the past in regards to several server issues I have experienced with the server I use to host this site and a few other domains I own. In that regard, this is an update post.

I am still experiencing issues with the server, and I still have the new server to swap it out with. I just have not had the means to do so yet. The issue I keep having is a kernel issue involving swap space. Just this morning while typing a post, the server started to lockup and started kicking errors. Luckily I had an SSH session open that allowed me to kill some services, perform a reboot and get things going again. I am not always that lucky.

As part of that, I will have to add an additional point to the post Why I Fail At Blogging. Another part of the reason I don’t promote as much as I could, nor post is server reliability. You don’t want to start getting tons of traffic, or even a moderate level of traffic if your hosting server is not reliable. Nothing irks me more that trying to get to a site and having it load slow, or worse, not at all. With that, sometimes publishing a post is painfully slow, problematic and makes the entire blogging process

Available for Freelance and other work

Monday, October 6th, 2008

I am currently accepting new projects, either on a freelance basis or on an employment basis. The employment basis may be either a temporary, temp-to-hire, contract-to-hire or direct hire situation. At this time I am not available for relocation, so local opportunities (those that are not available via telecommuting/offsite work) must be within the Front Range to Southern Colorado area.

Use my contact page if you are interesting in discussing any potential opportunities.
